Sørfjorden-Orjjesvuotna in Sami – lies surrounded by steep mountains, arctic nature and old routes along the coast of Vesterålen.
The fjord carries traces of it Sámi culture who for generations lived by the sea, fishing and the natural resources along the fjords of Northern Norway. For centuries, the area was a cultural meeting place between Norwegian and Sámi communities, where life was closely linked to the sea, the seasons, and the Arctic fjords. Many of the place names in the region have Sámi origins, and Sørfjord is known by its North Sámi name, Orjjesvuotna.
On a journey through the fjord, you not only experience spectacular nature, but also the history of the people who lived here – between the sea, the mountains, and the Arctic light.
